LET YOUR SUBCONSCIOUS BE YOUR GUIDE

Peter Josyph

"In this free, informal lecture, Peter Josyph shares personal anecdotes and offers sound encouragement on regarding the subconscious as a reliable ally in creating interesting work that can expand your identity as an artist in ways that are unique to your own talent. The talk includes examples from his life as an artist working simultaneously as a painter, an author, an actor- playwright, a photographer, and an award-winning filmmaker. “The key to never being blocked as an artist,” Josyph says, “is to master the art of keeping out of your own way and freeing the subconscious to do its own thing, which is almost always fresh and surprising. Of course it takes time to develop this congenial relationship with your subterranean channels of expression. As Jack Kerouac said, ‘Walking on water wasn’t built in a day.’”

PETER JOSYPH has had numerous solo exhibitions in New York as well as in El Paso, Texas; Berea, Kentucky; Lulea, Sweden; Heidelberg, Germany; Coventry, England; and Washington, D.C. His films include the award-winning Liberty Street: Alive at Ground Zero, and his books include Adventures in Reading Cormac McCarthy; What One Man Said to Another: Talks With Richard Selzer; Liberty Street: Encounters at Ground Zero; and The Wounded River, which was a New York Times Notable Book of 1993. He was playwright-in-residence at Victory Rep, where he wrote 50 plays; and he was artist-in-residence at the Smithtown Township Arts Council, where he won a Partnership Award from the Alliance of New York State Arts Councils; a grant from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation; and he became a New Yorker Talk of the Town. He is an adjunct professor in cinema adaptations of literature at Hutton House Lectures/LIU Post.
